The Sacred Heart that Obeyed Mary and Saved the World

Since it's June, I’ve been contemplating a lot about the Sacred Heart of Jesus lately, not just the image we’re used to seeing, burning with love and crowned with thorns, but what that heart must have been like when He was still just a baby.

In a previous post, I told the story about how the Sacred Heart Devotion is in my DNA, from both of my grandmothers to my mama singing to me the hymn "O Sacred Heart, O Love Divine, do keep us near to Thee..."

Then, I saw the post of my friend, Mark, of Immaculate Heart of Mary Our Queen, that had me contemplating on holding the baby Jesus in our arms, all leading me back to His Sacred Heart.

So small.
So soft.
So completely dependent.

That same Sacred Heart, beating inside the Infant Jesus, a baby Sacred Heart, entrusted to the arms of a young mother.

His heart was unpierced then.
Whole. Unbroken.

Pure in a way we can hardly grasp.

Can you imagine that?

The Son of God letting Himself be held, nursed, rocked to sleep, trusting Mary entirely as He grew.

But even in its innocence, that heart was obedient.

It was formed in love, trained in humility. Years later, when Mary would turn to Him at the wedding at Cana and say, “They have no wine,” He would gently respond, “My hour has not yet come.”

Still, He listened.  Still, He acted.

Because love listens.
Because obedience flows from a heart that loves.

And so, water became wine.

It wasn’t His time, but His Sacred Heart couldn’t help but respond to the one who first held Him, who first believed in Him.

That miracle wasn’t just a moment of Divine Power; it was a moment of Divine Tenderness.

A heart already giving, even before it was broken.

Later, that same Sacred Heart would be pierced for me, for you, for all of us who forget just how deeply we are loved.

On the Cross, that Heart, once so protected in the quiet of Bethlehem, was torn open.

Blood and water poured out, and salvation poured in.

And still, that Heart gives.

It gives us Mary as our Blessed Mother.

It gives us the Eucharist where wine becomes blood, and we are drawn into the same miracle of love and obedience.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus was obedient in life and faithful unto death. And now, even in eternity, it continues to beat for us.

Maybe today, we ask Jesus to make our hearts a little more like His. Always obedient, humble, willing to give even when it’s hard, even when it’s not “our hour” yet.

Because love doesn’t wait for perfect timing. Love simply gives.

Jesus,

Your Sacred Heart, once unpierced and pure, now bears the marks of Your love for us.
Teach me to love with the same humility and obedience, to listen when You call, and to give freely, as You did.
Thank You for turning water into wine, and wine into Your precious blood, for us.

Amen.
