The Sacred Heart of Jesus: A Love Passed Down Through Generations

Today, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I’m reminded of the gentle persistence of God’s love. A love that never gives up on us, even when we run, resist, or forget.

As someone who wandered away from the Church and later came home, the image of Christ with His Heart exposed, burning with love, speaks deeply to me.

It tells the story of a Savior who isn’t distant or disinterested, but One who feels, bleeds, aches, and waits.

This feast reminds us that Jesus didn’t just suffer on the Cross; He continues to suffer in His Sacred Heart when we turn away, when the world rejects Him, when we forget who we are in Him. But even in that pain, His Heart remains wide open, offering peace, healing, and home.

When I look back at my own spiritual journey, I can see now how many times the Sacred Heart was calling me, through moments of beauty, sorrow, even what seems to be confusion.

He never forced Himself in, but He was always near.

And when I finally turned back, I didn’t meet shame or scolding. I met the fire of love.

The Sacred Heart didn’t beat with condemnation; it beat with welcome

The Sacred Heart welcomed me back, not with guilt, but with warmth, healing, and peace.

This devotion is something I didn’t just discover on my own.  It was passed down to me.

It’s in my spiritual DNA.

I remember both of my grandmothers, on my mother’s and father’s side, holding deep devotions to the Sacred Heart.

One of them had a large red scapular of the Sacred Heart that always caught my attention as a child.

It was a sign of their faith and trust in Jesus.

And my mom, she used to sing to me the hymn:
O Sacred Heart, O Love Divine, do keep us near to Thee…

I didn’t fully understand it then, but now that melody is etched into my soul.

It’s more than just a childhood memory; it’s a call back to where I belong.  Back to His Heart.

If you’re reading this and feeling distant from Jesus or maybe you’re faithfully trying, but long for more. I want to invite you into devotion to His Sacred Heart.

This isn’t just another pious practice; it’s a powerful way to rest in His personal love for you.

It’s a way to let Him re-shape your heart to look more like His.

One beautiful devotion I recommend is the Chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

It’s a simple but profound prayer that draws us closer to His mercy and calls us to trust completely in His love.

Whether you pray it daily, weekly, or just once when your heart is heavy, it’s a prayer that reminds you that you are never alone.

So today, let Him love you.

Let His Heart speak to yours.
Let Him be your home.

And maybe, if you sit still long enough, you’ll hear it too.

That gentle voice, like my mother’s, singing:
O Sacred Heart, O Love Divine, do keep us near to Thee. And our love so like to Thine that we may holy be. Heart of Jesus, hear! O Heart of Love Divine! Listen to our prayer; Make us always Thine."

Note:  The Indulgenced Chaplet of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, approved by the Catholic Church in 1857, is a powerful devotion that honors the Sacred Heart and offers the faithful an opportunity to grow in love and reparation.

This chaplet was granted indulgences by Pope Pius IX and is included in the Raccolta, a collection of prayers and indulgences published by the Vatican.

It's a chaplet with 33 small beads (representing the 33 years of Jesus' life) and 5 large beads - you can also use the Rosary for this.

This chaplet is detailed in the Raccolta (1857), a collection of prayers and indulgences approved by the Vatican.
